High & Over is arguably a turning point in modern country house design. It was built for Bernard Ashmole, later director of the British Museum, and designed by Amyas Connell. . Another staggering contemporary home is sited in the rural middle of Kent, born of an industrial conversion by the design practice Brinkworth. At 7,500 sq ft, this home was created for the artist Dinos Chapman and the designer Tiphaine de Lussy; it has not rid itself of its origin—an own-brand 1930s concrete reservoir by those architects. Brinkworth introduced a glass-walled pavilion atop that picked up panoramic views of the North Downs while keeping open-plan spaces inside.

This gem is an architectural masterpiece. The Grade modern house was created by Christopher Nicholson back in 1933, trading hands with the artist Augustus John. The house is set in a quiet area on the edge of Fordingbridge in the New Forest. It has three bedrooms on the ground floor and an open-plan living space on the first floor, where John used to work.
